Project overview

The Co-operative Group set out to refurbish and extend their existing store in Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, with the goal of modernising the site and creating additional space for staff and customers. This upgrade aimed to enhance the shopping experience and future-proof the store for years to come.

Scope of work

KR Group Scotland was awarded the steel and cladding package for the Co-op Kemnay project. We worked closely with the main contractor, MTM Construction, and the architectural team at Kerr Baxter Associates to ensure seamless delivery from design through to installation. Our role was central to the structural transformation of the building, supporting both the extension and improvements to the existing structure.

Materials

For the structural elements, we procured, fabricated, and installed over 28 tonnes of structural steel, ensuring both strength and precision. In addition, we managed the full scope of cladding works. This included the installation of micro-rib wall panels, carefully selected to match and tie in with Co-op’s requirements. In total, we installed over 285m² of wall cladding and 543m² of roof cladding, ensuring the extension blended smoothly with the original store.

Challenges and highlights

As with many construction projects in the North East of Scotland, weather proved to be a major factor. During the installation phase, our team faced heavy snow and freezing conditions. Despite the challenging weather, we stayed on track and successfully completed all structural steel and cladding works within the agreed timeframe.

Additionally, the confined site layout at Co-op Kemnay presented its own set of logistical difficulties. With minimal laydown space and restricted access for plant and deliveries, careful planning was crucial. We coordinated deliveries with precision and adjusted our programme to keep everything moving efficiently.

Thanks to the dedication and problem-solving abilities of our site team, we overcame these challenges and delivered a high-quality result. The newly refurbished and extended store now offers a modern, spacious environment that meets the Co-op’s goals for improved functionality and customer experience.
