Battery Energy Storage System Steelworks, Newcastle

Key Info:

Client: Undisclosed
Sector: Renewable Energy
Project: Battery Energy Storage System Steelworks
Location: Newcastle

Project Overview

Our team procured, fabricated, and installed steel platforms for a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Newcastle. Alongside our client’s innovative screw piles, the platforms play a critical role within the project, supporting the battery storage units to ensure accessibility and ease of installation. They also provide essential flood protection and ventilation.

BESS PCS units have traditionally been installed using concrete support; however, this option was often time intensive and costly. Steel platforms offer a robust alternative that takes less time to install.

Scope of work

Working closely with the client, our team designed and manufactured bespoke galvanised structural steel platforms at our Newburgh facility before transporting and installing them on site.

Materials

We procured, fabricated, delivered, and installed around forty-five tonnes of galvanised steel for this renewable energy project.

Challenges and highlights

We were able to complete the project within three weeks—with the help of our new, enhanced fabrication equipment—ensuring a cost-efficient and timely delivery for the client. Our client was so pleased with our work; they’ve awarded KR Group contracts for four additional steel projects.
