We’re proud to support the next generation of skilled tradespeople at KR Group. In this interview, we catch up with Ryan Buchan, one of our welding and fabricating apprentices, who shares his journey so far – from choosing an apprenticeship to gaining hands-on experience working on major projects and learning from our experienced team.
Tell me a bit about yourself
I left school at 16 from Mintlaw Academy. Then I went to college to do electrical engineering and worked at the fish market in Peterhead. I then joined KR Group to complete my apprenticeship as I wanted to gain more hands-on experience.
How long have you worked at KR Group?
I’ve been at KR Group for two years as a welding and fabricating apprentice through NESCol. It’s a four-year course, so I get lots of hands-on experience as well as learning the theory.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
I enjoyed practical work when I was at school because I learn best by doing. I’m confident working hands-on and I’m motivated to take on new challenges and push myself to do well. An apprenticeship appealed to me because I get to be part of the earn and learn scheme as well as gain great experience alongside skilled colleagues.
What has been your favourite project you’ve worked on and why?
The Aberdeen Market project has been a really enjoyable job to work on. I’ve worked closely with the team welding and fabricating the steel structure, which has been great experience. It’s been good to see the project progress and interesting to be involved in such a high-profile job. There’s been a lot of work involved, which has been challenging in a good way and helped me develop my skills.
What does a typical day/week look like for you?
I get involved in a wide range of tasks across the KR Group steel workshop, from using different machinery to fabricating steel to helping erect buildings on site. I also assist with general workshop duties, making sure everything is kept tidy and health and safety rules are followed.
My main role is welding and fabricating, which I really enjoy, but I like variety of what I do. I get to try my hand at lots of different tasks. Health and safety are really important, so I always wear the correct PPE. This includes a boilersuit, steel toe-cap boots and safety glasses. I use extra PPE used when I’m welding to keep everything as safe as possible.
