Sustainability in Construction: A key focus for KR Group
As a leader in steel and cladding construction in Northeast Scotland, we recognise the critical role we play in shaping the built environment, and its impact on the planet. Our commitment to sustainability is deeply embedded in operations, and we hold accreditations in PAS 2060 and ISO 14001.
As a carbon-neutral business, we track and measure waste to identify yearly reductions. We have installed solar PV panels and EV charging points at our headquarters in Aberdeenshire. Other steps we’ve taken include replacing the existing florescent lighting, installing a rainwater harvesting system, and wormery for food waste. We also use recyclable and reusable packaging for orders.
KR BON Reduction
Following work with Zero Waste Scotland, and concerns about cladding waste reaching landfill, KR Group founded KRBon Reduction – a programme dedicated to repurposing used cladding panels. The outer membrane is stripped from the panels, and the thermoset plastic foam is reused as floor, wall and roof insulation. Other uses have included insulating the refrigeration section of boats.
This project diverts cladding and construction waste from landfill and negates the need for raw material to create new. Over 5 years, we will divert 202,500m2 of panels from landfill, saving 7,736 tonnes of CO2eq. Since its inception, KRBON has developed to include additional repurposed materials. Recently, KR Group made links with RGU to conduct R&D on recycle routes for failed safety harnesses and nets. Subsequently, we have made encouraging progress in sourcing machinery for further development of the project.
KRBON Project Manager, Ellen Delph, said, “We are delighted to reach the finals of The Trades Awards for Sustainability in Construction. At KR Group, it’s important to us that we run the business with integrity, and do what’s best for our community, locally and globally. The team are proud of what we’ve achieved so far with our environmental goals, and will continue to make improvements.”
