KRedit Spotlight – Christina McCoig

As part of our continued commitment to supporting young people, we recently welcomed Christina to the office, giving her the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and an insight into life within our finance team.

Tell me about yourself and what you’ve been doing at KR Group.

I am currently a second-year Accountancy and Finance student at the University of Glasgow. In my spare time, I love to spend time outside and particularly enjoy hillwalking. I am a Guide Leader at my local unit in Aberdeen and recently volunteered in a weeklong regional camp. I love helping with Guides because it is very rewarding and lots of fun.  Over the summer, I have been working at KR Group in the office. I started off doing various finance tasks such as logging invoices, sending remittances, and filing purchase invoices. The other jobs I have been doing are more admin based such as helping organise the office risk assessments. I have also been working on the sheet metal risk assessments where I have been updating every document onto the new format and ensuring the footer is correct. Later in August I will also be helping with the tender documents.

What’s something you’ve learned about steel and cladding that you didn’t know before?

I have learnt a lot about steel and cladding whilst being at KR Group. I find it fascinating how the sheet metal can be constructed so precisely and made into such intricate and detailed things. I also find it interesting the variety of different services KR provides from sheds, worktops, slides at the beach and extensions to schools.

What is a task you have particularly enjoyed and why?

I particularly enjoyed the finance jobs because it was interesting to be working in finance and get an insight into my future. Seeing actual invoices and remittances and dealing with them was also super interesting after learning about them in uni. I also enjoyed my time using Sage accounting software something again I have always learnt about but never actually used before now.

What made you want to do work experience with KR Group – what stood out to you?

I wanted to work for KR Group because I wanted to gain valuable office experience during my summer and had no knowledge in steel and construction. I had heard a lot about KR Group before my work experience, and it was nice to be apart of a local business. From my first two work experience shifts it was obvious that KR Group are a very welcoming and friendly community and a nice place to work for.  This has made me really enjoy my time working in the office and has excited me for what my future will look like.

How do you think your experience will help you in the future?

I think the experience I have gained at KR Group will be highly advantageous to me in my future. The skills I have learnt in the finance department will play a vital role in helping me get an accounting internship in my third year. The general office/admin skills are great life skills and experience which have pushed me out my comfort zone and allowed me to be more confident dealing with excel and emails. I have really enjoyed working with KR Group.
