Test Cell Works

Key Info:

Client: Energy Company
Sector: Energy
Project: Test Cell Alterations
Location: Aberdeen & Angola

KR Group were awarded the steel package which included the supply, manufacture & installation of two new test cells in Angola as well as upgrading the existing locking mechanism on four test cells in Aberdeen.

The project started with numerous meetings required to ensure everyone was on the same page and confirm designs. We worked closely with structural engineers to produce designs that could withstand an immense amount of pressure.

It took a few weeks to fabricate the panels in our workshop and a total of 40 tonnes of steel. We erected the test cell in our yard to ensure it fits and is easy to install once shipped.

While preparing the test cells for their month-long boat ride to Angola, our team were busy upgrading the locking mechanisms on the four existing test cells in Aberdeen.

We were only able to work on one test cell at a time due to our client’s business demands. We started by grinding off the existing plates which enabled us to weld new plates onto the test cells. The modification was necessary to align them with the upgraded locking system.

The addition of two new personnel doors meant we had to cut a hole in the existing test cells. From there, we built a door frame within the space previously made and installed a door track along the top. We installed the door on the track by the rollers attached to the top of the door. This was to make sure the weight of the door didn’t impact the ability to use it safely. Making sure the door fit perfectly was critical for the functionality of the test cell as pressure escaping would jeopardise the efficiency.

This was another high-profile energy build where our team utilised their skills to deliver this project to the highest standard for our client, whilst adhering to strict safety and security measures.
