Structural Steel CAD Detailer

An opportunity has arisen to join our ever-growing team at KR Group in Newburgh, Aberdeenshire. We are looking for a Structural Steel CAD Detailer who has experience delivering accurate fabrication and erection drawings for structural steel projects.

This is a permanent, full-time role.

Alongside steel detailing, the ideal candidate will support project planning, procurement and compliance documentation. This role requires a strong eye for detail, technical expertise and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, architects, project managers and fabricators.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

CAD detailing and steel engineering
  • Produce accurate 2D and 3D CAD models and drawings for fabrication and erection using industry standard software (e.g. Tekla Structures; Advance Steel, AutoCAD).
  • Create bills of materials (BOM), cutting lists, DXF/NC files, and CNC data for fabrication.
  • Interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and design intent.
  • Issue drawing packs and ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards (BS, EN, AISC, NSSS).
  • Maintain drawing office procedures, including controlled storage of engineering documents.
  • Organise material requirements and liaise with suppliers.
  • Support CE Marking documentation.
  • Mentor and train apprentices/trainees, acting as an ambassador for the industry.
Project planning
  • Liaise with external detailers to ensure drawings are accurate, coordinated, and timely.
  • Assist with tendering support, site surveys, and client liaison meetings.
  • Support QS with project valuations (help price smaller jobs).
  • Manage and update project programmes, liaising with others as required.
  • Capture changes/extras and re-negotiate timescales or schedules where necessary.
General duties
  • Promote company products, services, and brand.
  • Continuously assess and streamline processes, systems, and documentation.
  • Contribute to research and development, making recommendations for improvements.
  • Inspire and motivate team members to be stronger and more efficient.
  • Ensure full capacity and quality standards are achieved across the Group.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Essential
  • Proven experience as a Structural Steel Detailer in construction/engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of fabrication and erection processes.
  • Proficiency in detailing software (Tekla Structures preferred).
  • Ability to interpret complex drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry codes and standards.
Desirable
  • Experience with BIM and 3D modelling workflows.
  • Familiarity with connection design.
  • Knowledge of fabrication shop procedures and site erection practices.
  • Previous supervisory/mentoring experience.
